LOVE PHANTOM
(1995)

love me, I love you is the seventeenth single by B'z, released on July 7, 1995. After a spate of "serious" singles such as "Don't Leave Me" and "MOTEL", it was thought that this would be a suitable reprieve. Signaling the end of an era, "love me, I love you" was also the last B'z single to be issued on cassette. It was also released on a Friday to match the beginning of B'z LIVE-GYM Pleasure'95 "BUZZ!!". Because of the short release accounting window for the Oricon chart, sales were also slightly lower than other singles issued by band around the same time. The same year, a slight rework was found on the studio album LOOSE and thereafter collected on every applicable compilation, beginning with B'z The Best "Pleasure" in 1998, and followed by B'z The Best "ULTRA Pleasure" in 2008 and B'z The Best XXV 1988-1998 in 2013.

As one of the band's go-to short songs for live performances, the title song has been performed over 260 times too date. This has led to "love me, I love you" being included in setlists for "SURVIVE", Pleasure 2000 "juice", "BIG MACHINE", "CIRCLE OF ROCK", "Ain't No Magic", and B'z LIVE-GYM 2015 -EPIC NIGHT-. Notably, it is one of only a few songs to be performed at more than one international show for the band, with showings during B'z LIVE-GYM in Taipei & Hong Kong 2001, "Rock n' California Roll", "BANZAI IN NORTH AMERICA", and -long time no see-.

The music video was shot in Sapporo and features Koshi in a suit walking down the street as he sings along to the song. Fans and members of the public appear in the video recognizing him as he does and follow along. Tak appears in a cabaret club for his portion. The video would be one of the trademark promotional videos for the band and was later released on B'z The Best XXV 1988-1998's limited edition. The song was further played on television during numerous appearances over the years, with performances on Music Station and Pop Jam '95 in the year of its release. Additionally, the song re-appeared and was coupled with "Ai no Bakudan" during two television performances in 2005.

The single opened to sales of over 455,000 in its first week, earning it the top spot on the Weekly Oricon Singles chart where it remained for two straight weeks. Its sales earned it the top spot of July 1995, tenth for August, and 14th for all of 1995, with 17 weeks on the charts. With sales of over 1.4 million total, the single was certified Million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan.

Track listing

  1. love me, I love you
File:s17 01.ogg As one of the band's most relentlessly upbeat pop singles, "love me, I love you" has remained a staple in B'z live shows. Koshi considered the song an "evolution of 'Wonderful Opportunity'" from IN THE LIFE. Although it is a pop song, it is particularly difficult to play as a drummer in a live setting; this sentiment was shared by both Kurose Karichi and Shane Gaalaas on different occasions. As one of their top 10 most performed songs, "love me, I love you" has appeared regularly in LIVE-GYM setlists since its release in 1995. Apart from a karaoke revision, it has only been revised once, when live bass was added for the studio version found on LOOSE.
  2. Tokyo — 東京
File:s17 02.ogg A single recorded around the same time as earlier single "MOTEL", "Tokyo" is a B-side with surprisingly lush production vlaues. While Tak commented he really liked the song in the years following its release, it has still never been played live. It has not been collected on any album, either, apart from a remix appearing on B'z The "Mixture" in 2000.
